Books to read

I have a ton of trouble finding time to read, and books look intimidating, in contrast with 5-minute news articles or the infinite-yet-short scroll of social media.

Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy

Cathy O’Neil presents practical cases of what she calls “weapons of math destruction”: algorithms used in everything from police departments to social media, that run unchecked and usually affect people’s lives for the worse.

This is for:

Everyone.

Why this:

As citizens of the internet, if we understand some of the hidden workings of these machines, we can protect ourselves.

Inspired: how to create tech products customers love

Marty Cagan’s book on product management opens with six pages of praise. That’s how good this book is. Cagan covers both theory and practice of this industry, from the best ways to discover what we want from a product, to the ecosystem around it: our team, our stakeholders, our market and the challenges of everyday work.

This is for:

Product owners / product managers.

Why this:

This book encases so much knowledge about product management (and is praised by so many people in our industry) that no matter your degree of experience, you’re guaranteed to learn something new.
